There’s also a more-than-slightly-used vintage washstand from Twin Falls Lodge, a National Historic Site in the Upper Yoho Valley of British Columbia.
“We don’t know for sure, but the washstand from Twin Falls may have been used by Lawren Harris on his honeymoon there,” says Donna Livingstone, CEO of the Whyte Museum.
The idea of expanding the digital side of things is to allow potential visitors access to the museum’s collection before their visit, Livingstone says.
“A lot of people just want to sample before they come,” she says. “So we want to make sure that our collections are available and searchable online so you can see the variety. You may not want to come for the whole day, but there might be something about Jimmy Simpson that you’re crazy about. We can link not just to our art collection and some of his paintings but his books, his diaries, we’ve got some spoken-word tape recordings of his. It’s encouraging personal learning or an exploration if you want to find out something on your own.”
